Nearly two dozen people were displaced following a fire on Monday at an apartment complex in Hartford where two people were rescued from the building and taken to the hospital.

Fire crews responded to a multi-unit apartment building at 277 Wethersfield Ave. at 9:23 p.m. on the report of a fire and found a blaze on the first floor, according to the Hartford Fire Department.

Firefighters quickly put out the flames and evacuated the residents, fire officials said.

One woman was brought out through the stairs and another had to be rescued using a ladder truck that reached the third floor, officials said. Both women were treated at the scene and later taken to an area hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire department’s Special Services Unit worked with the American Red Cross to help the seven families that were displaced following the fire. This included 21 adults and two children.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
