Elise Stefanik faced questions at her confirmation hearing Tuesday to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations about her lack of foreign policy experience, her strong support for Israel and her views on funding the U.N. and its many agencies.

Harvard-educated and the fourth-ranking member of the U.S. House, she was elected to Congress in 2015 as a moderate Republican and is leaving a decade later as one of President Trump’s most ardent allies.

Below is the UN ambassador hearing:

Stefanik was grilled about her views on the wars in GazaUkraine, Sudan and elsewhere as well as the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs — all issues on the U.N. agenda.

Frigid weather has rewritten the pageantry of the day. Trump’s swearing-in was moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda — the first time that has happened in 40 years — and the inaugural parade was replaced by an event at a downtown arena.

Frigid weather moved Trump’s swearing-in indoors to the Capitol Rotunda, the first such move in 40 years. The inaugural parade was replaced by an event in a downtown arena.

Trump began Monday with a prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Then he and his wife Melania were greeted at the executive mansion by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden for the customary tea. Trump took the oath of office at noon.

Zach Freemantle had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Xavier hung on in the final seconds to beat No. 7 Marquette 59-57 to earn its third straight victory while snapping the Golden Eagles’ six-game winning streak Saturday.

Xavier (12-7, 4-4 Big East) never trailed and led by as many as 19 but needed to make a stop in the final seconds to preserve the victory. Xavier’s Dailyn Swain appeared to knock the ball away as Marquette’s Stevie Mitchell was driving to the basket before a potential tying shot could be attempted.

Marquette (15-3, 6-1) had won its last five meetings in this series, including a 72-70 triumph at Xavier on Dec. 21. Freemantle didn’t play against Marquette last month because of a lower-body injury.

David Joplin had 17 points to lead Marquette.

Takeaways

Xavier: The Musketeers got the signature win they needed to boost their NCAA Tournament credentials. Xavier earned its first win over a top-10 team since beating then-No. 2 UConn 83-73 at home on Dec. 31, 2022.

Marquette: The Golden Eagles went scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes early in the second half as Xavier extended its lead to 45-26. They had come from behind to beat Georgetown and DePaul in their last two games, but they dug themselves too big a hole this time.

Key moment

Marquette got one last chance when Joplin forced a tie ball with Xavier’s Ryan Conwell with 8.6 seconds remaining. Chase Ross inbounded the ball to Kam Jones, whose pass was deflected before Mitchell got it in 3-point range. Mitchell tried driving to the basket but couldn’t attempt a shot.

Key stats

Neither team got much production from its leading scorers. Conwell, coming off a 34-point performance in a victory over Villanova, had six points and shot 3 of 13 overall and 0 of 8 from 3-point range. Jones had 11 points, shot 5 of 13, went 1 of 6 from beyond the arc and missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds left.

Yale 92, Columbia 88

John Poulakidas’ 29 points helped Yale defeat Columbia 92-88 on Saturday.

Poulakidas added five rebounds for the Bulldogs (9-6, 2-0 Ivy League). Nick Townsend scored 20 points while shooting 8 of 12 from the field and 3 for 3 from the line and added nine rebounds. Bez Mbeng had 19 points and shot 4 for 8 (2 for 3 from 3-point range) and 9 of 13 from the free-throw line.

Avery Brown led the way for the Lions (11-4, 0-2) with 21 points and four assists. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa added 17 points and three steals for Columbia. Kenny Noland finished with 16 points and four assists.

Both teams next play Monday. Yale hosts Dartmouth and Columbiatakes on Princeton on the road.

St. Peter’s (NJ) 66, Sacred Heart 61

Marcus Randolph had 18 points to help Saint Peter’s turn back Sacred Heart 66-61 on Saturday.

Randolph also grabbed six rebounds for the Peacocks (7-8, 2-5 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Mouhamed Sow totaled 12 points and five rebounds. Armoni Zeigler scored 10.

Amiri Stewart led the way for the Pioneers (6-12, 2-5) with 21 points, six rebounds and two steals. Anquan Hill added 13 points and six rebounds. Tanner Thomas had 10 points and six boards.

Quinnipiac 91, Mt. St. Mary’s 57

Quinnipiac continued its torrid start to conference play with a blowout win on the road over Mt. St. Mary’s. The Bobcats (11-8, 7-1/MAAC) led by just one at the half but outscored the Mountaineers 55-22 in the second half.

Amarri Monroe led Quinnipiac with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Khaden Bennett scored 21 and grabbed five boards. Quinnipiac sits just behind Marist, which entered Saturday at 6-0 in conference, in the MAAC standings.

Canisius 78, Fairfield 67

Paul McMillan IV scored 31 points on 9 of 16 shooting as Canisius outlasted Fairfield on the road on Saturday. The Golden Griffins (2-16, 2-5 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) earned just their second win of the year, both coming in the last four games after an 0-14 start.

Tana Kopa added 21 for Canisius. Jamie Bergens led the Stags (7-11, 3-4) with 17 points.

Central Connecticut State 71, Fairleigh Dickinson 60

Jayden Brown led the way with 16 points as CCSU topped FDU in New Jersey on Saturday. Central (12-6, 3-2 Northeast Conference) saw four players score in double figures in the win.

Ahmed Barba-Bey led Fairleigh Dickinson with 25 points.

Brother of Aaron Hernandez pleads guilty to making threats to carry out shooting at UConn https://www.courant.com/2024/12/18/brother-of-aaron-hernandez-pleads-guilty-to-making-threats-to-carry-out-shooting-at-uconn/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:13:32 +0000 https://www.courant.com/?p=8419146 Dennis Hernandez, the troubled brother of late New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, pleaded guilty on Wednesday in federal court to making threats against the University of Connecticut and three out-of-state individuals.

Dennis John Hernandez, also known as “DJ Hernandez” and “Jonathan Hernandez,” 38, of Bristol, waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford to transmitting interstate communications containing a threat to injure, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On July 6 and 7, 2023, Hernandez reportedly made multiple statements to an individual on Facebook Messenger threatening to carry out a shooting at UConn, court records show. Hernandez played on the UConn football team from 2004-08 as a quarterback and wide receiver.

According to court records, the messages read, “I would recommend remaining away from there because when I go I’m taking down everything  And don’t give a f— who gets caught in the crossfire. I’ve died for years now and now it’s others people turn. I’m prepared to give my life. So if I don’t get to see you on the outside know I love you always. Not all shootings are bad I’m realizing. Some are necessary for change to happen.”

Hernandez’s car was allegedly seen on UConn’s campus on July 7, court records show.

Court records show that Hernandez was struggling financially and frustrated at seeing other people get hired as football coaches and felt owed by UConn, according to the Associated Press.

He also reportedly drove to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he was once its quarterbacks coach, to “map the schools out” for a shooting, according to court records.

On July 18 and 19, 2023, Hernandez made multiple Facebook posts “threatening to harm or kill three individuals who reside out of state, including a state court judge,” officials said.

During a text message conversation with one of the individuals on July 19, 2023, Hernandez reportedly said, “We’re taking lives if s— isn’t paid up. It’s been years in planning just taking notes, names and locations. They talked their way into this and it’s almost point game. I know we don’t play in my family. If we have to take lives or buildings we will. So just letting you know so you can be prepared for a media circus one way or another.”

Hernandez is also facing state charges in connection with an incident at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol. On March 2023, he was arrested on breach of peace charges after police allege that he threw a bag containing a brick and a note over a fence and onto ESPN’s property.

“To all media outlets, It’s about time you all realize the effect media has on all family members. Since you’re a world wide leader maybe you could lead how media and messages are delivered brick by brick. Clean it up! Yours truly, Dennis J. Hernandez,” the note said, according to police.

Authorities allege that Hernandez was angry with people he thought were profiting off the death of his younger brother. Aaron Hernandez killed himself in 2017 while serving a murder sentence.

Hernandez faces a maximum of five years in federal prison during his sentencing on Feb. 6, 2025. He has been detained since his arrest on related state charges on July 19, 2023.

After his arrest last year, Terri Hernandez, Dennis Hernandez’s mother, told police he had deteriorating mental health problems including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, according to the Associated Press. Dennis Hernandez was tased and taken into custody after he came out of his sister’s house reportedly yelling “shoot me” and threatening to harm officers, police said.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

UnitedHealthcare CEO killed in ‘targeted shooting’ in NYC; company has strong CT connection https://www.courant.com/2024/12/04/unitedhealthcare-ceo-is-killed-in-a-targeted-shooting-outside-a-new-york-hotel-officials-say/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 14:26:12 +0000 https://www.courant.com/?p=8372424&preview=true&preview_id=8372424 NEW YORK — UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed Wednesday morning in what police said was a “brazen, targeted attack” outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer — one of Connecticut’s largest — was holding an investor conference.

The 50-year-old executive was shot around 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The gunman appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police had not yet established a motive.

“Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Tisch said, adding that the shooting “does not appear to be a random act of violence.”

Thompson was struck at least once in the back and once in the calf, Tisch said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a distinct gray backpack, then fled on foot down an alleyway before pedaling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away. The shooter was at large, sparking a search that included police drones, helicopters and dogs.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare,” the insurer’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, said in a statement.

“Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” the company said. “We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.”

The fatal attack sent shockwaves throughout the business community with one local expert observing that something that was all violently real seemed like it was something out a television crime drama.

David Cadden, professor emeritus of entrepreneurship and strategy at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, said violence against corporate chief executives is “extremely rare” in the United States and, generally, across in North America.

One notable exception, Cadden said, was the slaying of a drug company CEO and his wife in Canada in 2017.

Barry Sherman, the founder and chief executive of generic drugmaker Apotex Inc., and his wife, Honey, were found dead in their Toronto mansion.

Sherman, a billionaire and high-profile philanthropist, and his wife were discovered hanging by belts from a railing that surrounded their indoor pool., according to multiple published reports.

The case has not been solved.

The New York Hilton Midtown, where Thompson was shot, is a short walk from tourist sites, including Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Modern Art, and is often dense with tourists and workers on weekday mornings. Part of the block where the shooting took place was cordoned off with police tape, with a large contingent of police officers at the scene. Many security cameras are nearby.

Police issued a poster showing a surveillance image of the suspect pointing what appeared to be a gun and another image that appeared to show the same person on a bicycle. Police offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The killing shook a part of New York City that’s normally quiet at that hour, happening about four blocks from where tens of thousands of people are set to gather Wednesday night for the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting.

Police sought to reassure New Yorkers and promised extra security for the tree lighting, which will go on as scheduled.

“We’re encouraging New Yorkers to go about their daily lives and their daily business but to be alert,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said.

Investigators recovered several 9 mm shell casings from outside the hotel and a cellphone from the alleyway through which the suspect fled. They were also searching Thompson’s hotel room and interviewing his UnitedHealthcare colleagues, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said.

Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that the executive told her “there were some people that had been threatening him.” She said she didn’t have details, but suggested they may have involved issues with insurance coverage.

Quinnipiac’s Cadden said he foresees a jump in security measures for top corporate executives.

In the past, beefed-up security may have leaned more heavily on such industries as pharmaceuticals, health insurance and defense, Cadden said

But now — at least in the near-term — those measures will likely become more widespread.

“All of a sudden, you’re going to see that everyone is going to take a look at ‘do we have in-house security and do we need to get a contract with an external security firm?’ “ Cadden said. “External security firms are going to be doing a bumper business over the next year.”

Cadden said a threatening letter or email is going to be examined in a much different light.

“This is going to put a scare into everyone, and they are going to be taking a look at any letter that they get” and that could set off heightened security,” Cadden said.

UnitedHealthcare is the insurance arm of the health care giant UnitedHealth Group Inc. and is a major employer in Connecticut.

The Minnetonka, Minnesota-based company was scheduled to have its annual meeting with investors in New York City to update Wall Street on the company’s direction and expectations for the coming year, according to a company media advisory. The company ended the conference early in the wake of Thompson’s death.

“I’m afraid that we — some of you may know we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” a company official told attendees, according to a transcript. “And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today. … I’m sure you’ll understand.”

Thompson had served as CEO for more than three years and had been with the company since 2004.

UnitedHealthcare is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the U.S. and manages health insurance coverage for employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs.

In Connecticut, UnitedHealth Group, the parent of UnitedHealthcare, has a 20% share of the state’s commercial health insurance market, in which policies are sold through private employers, according to the American Medical Association, based on 2023 data.

UnitedHealth was second only to Elevance Health, the former Anthem, Inc, which has a 37% market share, the AMA said.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz tweeted that the state is “sending our prayers to Brian’s family and the UnitedHealthcare team.”

“This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” the Democrat wrote.

Christmas trees have been illuminated from Brussels to Hong Kong. In the United States, President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, decked out the White House with some whimsical decorations to evoke the “peace and light” of the season.

Here are some snapshots of the season:

House races in a state-by-state slog, with many races too early to call https://www.courant.com/2024/11/06/who-won-the-house/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 21:37:02 +0000 https://www.courant.com/?p=8325269&preview=true&preview_id=8325269 WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have taken control of the U.S. Senate and are fighting to keep their majority in the U.S. House, which would produce a full sweep of GOP power in Congress alongside President-elect Donald Trump in the White House.

A unified Republican grip on Washington would set the course for Trump’s agenda. Or if Democrats wrest control of the House, it would provide an almost certain backstop, with veto power over the White House.

Trump, speaking early Wednesday at his election night party in Florida, said the results delivered an “unprecedented and powerful mandate” for Republicans.

He called the Senate rout “incredible.” And he praised House Speaker Mike Johnson, who dashed from his own party in Louisiana to join Trump. “He’s doing a terrific job,” Trump said.

From the U.S. Capitol, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, privately a harsh Trump critic, called it a “hell of a good day.”

Vote counting in some races could go on for days, and control of the House is too early to call.

Where do the House races stand?

House races are focused in New York and California, where Democrats are trying to claw back some of the 10 or so seats where Republicans have made surprising gains in recent years.

Other House races are scattered around the country, with some of the most contentious in Maine, the “blue dot” around Omaha, Nebraska, and in Alaska.

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the House “remains very much in play.”

To gain control of the House, Democrats need to flip four seats from Republicans, while holding all of their own, a tall task especially in congressional districts where Trump has won.

It could come down to just a handful of seats, or as little as one, to determine House control.

Johnson voiced confidence, posting on X: “Republicans are poised to have unified government in the White House, Senate, and House.”

Johnson: Republicans working on ‘ambitious’ agenda

Harris ignited enthusiasm for her party when Biden dropped out of the race, and she stepped in atop the ticket, a head-spinning development barely 100 days from the election. But Democrats watched their own hopes for a sweep of Washington fizzle.

Voters said the economy and immigration were the top issues facing the country, but the future of democracy was also a leading motivator for many Americans casting ballots in the presidential election.

AP VoteCast, an expansive survey of more than 120,000 voters nationwide, found a country mired in negativity and desperate for change as Americans faced a stark choice between Trump and Harris.

This is the first presidential election since the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, when Trump sent a mob of his supporters to “fight like hell” against the 2020 election. Many Republicans in Congress voted against President Joe Biden’s victory. Congress will again be called on next year to certify the 2024 election.

Even still, the election followed one of the most chaotic congressional sessions in modern times as the Republican-led House kicked out its speaker, Kevin McCarthy, threatened government shutdowns and had difficulty conducting the basic operations of governance.

Johnson has said Republicans in the House and Senate have been working on an “ambitious” 100 day-agenda — cutting taxes, securing the U.S. border and taking a ”blowtorch” to federal regulations — if they sweep the White House and Congress.

Trump himself has promised mass deportations and retribution on his perceived enemies. Republicans want to push federal agencies out of Washington and restaff the government workforce, Johnson said, to bring the federal government “to heel.”

Trump is “thinking big” about his legacy, Johnson said.

History makers in Congress

Several states will send history-makers to the new Congress.

Voters elected two Black women to the Senate, Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware and Democrat Angela Alsobrooks, who defeated Republican Larry Hogan, the former governor, in Maryland. Just three Black women have served in the Senate, and never before have two served at the same time.

And in New Jersey, Andy Kim became the first Korean American elected to the Senate. The seat opened when Bob Menendez resigned this year after his federal conviction on bribery charges.

In the House, candidate Sarah McBride, a Democratic state lawmaker from Delaware who is close to the Biden family, became the first openly transgender person elected to Congress.

What’s still unclear is who will lead the new Republican Senate, as longtime leader McConnell prepares to step down from the post.

South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the No. 2 Republican, and Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who previously held that post, are the front-runners to replace McConnell in a secret-ballot election scheduled for when senators arrive in Washington next week.

Billions of dollars have been spent by the parties, and outside groups, on the narrow battleground for both the 435-member House and 100-member Senate.

If the two chambers do in fact flip party control, as is possible, it would be rare.

Records show that if Democrats take the House and Republicans take the Senate, it would be the first time that the chambers of Congress have both flipped to opposing political parties.

Reporting by the Associated Press was used to compile this report.
