Fire crews rescued a deer that was trapped in the ice of a river in Westport early Thursday.
The rescue occurred on the Saugatuck River near the Post Road where crews responded at 6:49 a.m. after receiving the report that a deer was trapped in the ice, according to Jeff Gootman, assistant chief of the Westport Fire Department.
Gootman said crews used cold water rescue suits as they made their way out to the deer. Video of the rescue shows crews aboard a raft securing a line to the animal, which was partially in the river water, before it was pulled to shore.

According to Gootman, the deer walked into a wooded area following the rescue.
