A man was killed in a shooting in Bridgeport on Thursday evening.

Officers from the Bridgeport Police Department responded to reports of a person shot on the 100 block of Hewitt Street just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, according to a release from Tiadora Josef, director of public information for the City of Bridgeport.

Arriving officers located a victim, identified as 48-year-old Derek Martin of Bridgeport, at the front of a multi-family home on Hewitt Street suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso, Josef said. Medics arrived at the scene and transported the Martin to an area hospital where he died a short time later, according to Josef.

“The Bridgeport Police Department offers our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the victim,” police said in the release on Thursday.

Patrol officers secured the scene and notified the Detective Bureau Homicide Squad, who responded along with the Forensic Identification Unit, Josef said.

The Detective Bureau canvassed the area, identifying potential witnesses and developing a suspect.

According to Josef, a preliminary investigation determined that the incident started inside the residence and continued outside onto the front porch of the home.

Detectives developed strong leads in the case and believe that Martin knew his attacker, said Josef.

Hewitt Street was closed between Connecticut Avenue and Hewitt Court as police conducted the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the case officer, Det. Thomas Harper, at 203-581-5239 or the Bridgeport Police Department tips line at 203-576-TIPS.
