Parts of the state are expected to see freezing rain in the early morning hours Saturday and possibly into the afternoon.
A winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service calls for freezing rain and a “light glaze” of ice accumulation in the Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties.
The advisory will be in effect from 4 a.m. until 1 p.m., when temperatures are expected to climb into the 30s and possibly the low 40s. Patches of fog are expected later in the afternoon.
The icy conditions, which are expected to affect much of the northern portion of the state, could lead to slick sidewalks, roads and bridges, the weather service said.
The advisory cautioned drivers to “slow down and use caution while traveling,” as the freezing rain could make for hazardous conditions.
The advisory comes as AAA estimated that about 933,231 Connecticut residents — just under 26% of the population — would be driving to celebrate the holidays between the weekend before Christmas and the New Year.
Looking ahead, the forecast is for more mild temperatures over the weekend and periods of rain, according to Accuweather.
