One person died and three others were hospitalized following a fire at a residential complex in Bridgeport on Monday.

The Bridgeport Emergency Communications Center received calls reporting a structure fire at a residential building at 368 Connecticut Ave. around 4:50 p.m. on Monday, according to Tiadora Josef, director of public information for the City of Bridgeport.

The blaze quickly became a two-alarm fire, Josef said.

According to Josef, three people were transferred to a local hospital, and one person was pronounced dead.

Four adults and four children were being relocated by the Red Cross, Josef said.

The Bridgeport Fire Marshal’s Office, in conjunction with the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, is investigating the incident, according to Josef.

“The Bridgeport Fire Department sends its condolences to the family during this difficult time,” said Josef.

State Sen. Herron Keyon Gaston, D-Bridgeport, offered his condolences to the victims and families affected by Monday’s fire.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic fire that occurred last night claiming the life of one person and leaving multiple families without a home just days before Christmas,” Gaston said in a release on Tuesday. “During this profoundly difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with the family who has lost their loved one and with all those affected by this devastating event. The holiday season, meant for warmth and togetherness, is now marked by unimaginable sorrow for these families. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost so much.”
