Robert Ivan Bourgoin, 88, of West Hartford, CT, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024. He was born on August 27, 1936, in Limestone, Maine. He is the beloved son of the late Edmond and Jeane (Pelletier) Bourgoin and spent his formative years in Caribou, Maine.
In 1965, Robert married his devoted wife, Laura, and together they shared 59 years of unwavering commitment and love. He was a dedicated father to their three children: daughter Tracy Bourgoin, and sons Brian and Bruce Bourgoin. His family grew to include five cherished grandchildren: Julia Adams, Chloe Bourgoin, Tyler Bourgoin, Scarlett Bourgoin, and Austin Bourgoin. He is also survived by his siblings, John Bourgoin and Janet Walton, and was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Bourgoin.
Robert honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1962 as a steam-powered engine mechanic, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Second Class (PO2-E5). He was a proud crew member of the USS Abbot (DD-629) and the USS Parsons (DD-949). Notably, he was part of the commissioning crew of the USS Parsons, earning the esteemed title of “Plank Owner.” During his naval service, Robert crossed the equator en route to Rio de Janeiro and ventured into the Arctic Circle aboard the USS Abbot. He loved sharing stories about his Navy days and frequently attended Navy reunions, cherishing the camaraderie with his fellow sailors.
After his military service, Robert dedicated himself to a blue-collar career, specializing in tile and carpet installation. In retirement, he cherished road trips with his wife, Laura, often returning to Caribou, Maine, and delighting in surprising friends and family with visits. His hobbies included woodworking, solving crosswords, and sharing jokes, even those that were a bit off-color. Known for his industrious nature, Robert remained active and engaged throughout his life, never one to be idle.
A passionate baseball fan, Robert equally loved the Boston Red Sox and harbored a spirited disdain for the New York Yankees, fully embracing the historic rivalry between the two teams. Additionally, he took pride in his French-Canadian heritage and spoke French whenever possible.
Throughout his life, Robert overcame numerous challenges, always maintaining his steadfast commitment as a father and husband. His resilience and dedication to his family were evident in every aspect of his life.
Calling hours will be Friday, January 3, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. A funeral service to honor Robert’s life will take place on Saturday, January 4, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Avenue, West Hartford.
