Jerry Ann Putt OBITUARY

Jerry Ann Putt OBITUARY

Jerry Ann Putt passed away on December 18 after several years of dementia and living with assistance at River Ridge of Avon. She was the wife of William Putt of West Hartford, the mother of David Putt and grandmother of Atticus and Samson Putt of Avon Connecticut. She was also the aunt of Jessica and Kristina Rainey of West Hartford CT and Bedias TX respectively. Jerry Ann was born in Bunkie Louisiana in 1942 but grew up in Navasota TX on a cattle ranch which her father ran. She was predeceased by her two younger brothers David and Norton Rainey. She graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas TX and earned a master’s degree from Texas A&M in history. Her first job was teaching high school history in Beaumont TX. This was the height of the struggle for school integration and Jerry Ann was a crusader in this cause in a newly integrated high school. About this time she met her beloved husband who was in graduate school at MIT. She moved to Cambridge MA and began teaching history in Dracut MA. In December of 1968 she married William Putt in Houston TX. After their marriage they moved to Watertown MA where their son David was born in 1971. When Dr. Putt received his PhD from MIT they moved to Glastonbury CT where Dr. Putt founded with others a company which ultimately made telephone equipment. Shortly after arriving in Connecticut Jerry Ann began supporting and soon managing several statewide campaigns for attorney general and governor. Subsequently she became staff to the appropriations committee of the Connecticut House of Representatives on which she served for a year and a half. Jerry Ann loved being involved in political causes that sought to counter segregation, inequality and discrimination where she saw it. She and her husband lived in West Hartford for 45 years as their son progressed through Morley elementary school, King Phillip Middle school and Hall High School. Jerry Ann was always comforted by reading her bible and engaging in bible study in her Church, Asylum Hill Congregational Church of Hartford. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, December 26, with visitation from 10-11 am followed by a service at 11 am at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford.
