Frances E. Bassford OBITUARY

Frances Eva (Zito) Bassford, formerly Mathis, 96, of Cromwell, passed away at Pilgrim Manor on January 11, 2025. Born on December 3, 1928, in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Gialessandro “John” Zito and Lucia (Benvenuto) Zito. A graduate of Weaver High School in Hartford, Frances earned her Associate’s Degree from Northwestern Community College in Torrington and went on to work as a medical assistant for many years. Frances lived a full and rewarding life centered on faith. She found joy in attending church and took great pleasure in reading, gardening, cooking, camping, tennis, and skiing. Above all, she cherished her family and friends, taking immense pride in their accomplishments.

Frances is survived by her son, Attorney David J. Mathis and his wife Julia of Wethersfield and her beloved granddaughters, Mary and Hope Mathis. She also leaves behind her sister, Elizabeth DiMauro of Cromwell; brother, Attorney Edward Zito and his wife Kathleen of West Hartford and sisters-in-law, Janet Zito of Cromwell and Martha Zito of Wethersfield, as well as several adored nieces and nephews. Frances was predeceased by her first husband, Reverend John P. Mathis, minister of the Wilson and Litchfield Congregational churches, and her second husband, Dr. William Bassford of Watertown. She was also predeceased by five siblings: Dominic Zito, Joseph Zito, Mary DiPrato, Antoinette Brazukas and Reverend Dr. William J. Zito.

A Memorial Service for Frances will be held on February 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Covenant Village, 101 West Street, Cromwell.
